Why Guatemala?
Guatemala is located in Central America. The nation is more than three times the size of Holland and is populated by approximately 14 million people. It is one of the poorest nations in Latin America, partly because of the civil war that raged there for years. The affects of this war are still very apparent. The following quote from the magazine “International Cooperation” (IS, april 2004) illustrates the state of matters: “Inequality in Guatemala is great. Sixteen percent of the population lives on less than a dollar a day, over a third on less than two dollars a day. The poor mostly live on the countryside, are women and indigenous.”

Of all the nations in Central America, the gap between poor and wealthy is most apparent in Guatemala. The indigenous people of Guatemala are suffering the most. They have been excluded from help by, amongst other things, money-issues. Beyond this, many of them are also illiterate and uneducated.
